Statfjord field
Statfjord is producing 15,587 barrels of oil equivalent a day — 0.4% of everything the Norwegian Continental Shelf produced in May 2026, ranking 50 of the 94 fields in production.
What it produces
In May 2026 the field delivered 15,587 barrels of oil equivalent a day, classified by the directorate as oil — roughly 49% oil and 36% gas by energy content. Output has moved down 25.7% over the past twelve months, and the directorate's profile for the field is late life. The field's best year was 1992, averaging 713,239 boe/d — today it runs at 2% of that.
Since 1979, Statfjord has produced roughly 4,441 million barrels of oil equivalent in total. The directorate's estimate of recoverable resources is 4,512 million boe, of which about 98% has now been recovered; 79 million boe remained as of 31.12.2025.
The story of Statfjord
Statfjord was for years the largest oil field in the North Sea, straddling the boundary with the British sector. Discovered in 1974, it was built out with three Condeep concrete giants — Statfjord A on stream in 1979, B in 1982 and C in 1985 — and through the late eighties it alone produced more oil than most member states of OPEC’s smaller half.
The field was scheduled to shut down repeatedly and never has: drilling continues, and the licence has been extended toward its sixth decade.
